Prevention and Control
Cultural Control
Cultural methods are very important. Hammond (1997) found that population increases were associated with tillage systems involving substantial soil disturbance, and Hammond (1995) observed that timing of tillage operations also affected population sizes. The use of a winter cover crop may also increase fly populations (Hammond, 1991). Hammond and Cooper (1993) found that planting soyabeans 3.5 weeks after the cover crop had been incorporated into the soil reduced populations of D. platura.
Host-Plant Resistance
Very little work has been carried out on the development of resistant varieties, but Neuvel and Versluis (1996) assessed the susceptibility of thirteen cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris grown in the Netherlands.

Chemical Control
Due to the variable regulations around (de-)registration of pesticides, we are for the moment not including any specific chemical control recommendations. For further information, we recommend you visit the following resources:

Impact
D. platura is a serious pest of seeds and seedlings. Larrain (1994) reported damage to onion seedlings and shallots (Allium ascalonicum) in Chile that reached 17.9 and 35.8%, respectively. Chaudhary et al. (1989) found up to six larvae per seed and up to 90% infestation of spring-sown maize in India. There is also some evidence that D. platura may transmit some bacterial diseases of plants, namely Bacillus phytophthorus, Erwinia carotovora and E. stewartii [ Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii] (Griffiths, 1993).
